Has the quality of Carnatic music really diminished over the years? Like mantra, saMgIta needs to have vIrya without which it is either noise or a little more than that. I was listening to clips from this year's Thyagaraja Aradhana and there was absolutely no sense of serenity or divinity whatsoever, something which has always been the core of this sacred celebration. But listen to an older clip that shows stalwarts such as MS Amma, Semmangudi Mama, Maharajapuram, DKJ etc. They make contemplation on the lotus feet of bhagavAn jAnakIramaNa effortless and ecstatic.
