The dharma shAstras state that there is no doSha in eating meat (based on adhikAra and sandarbha):
mantreNAsaMskR^itaM mAMsaM nAdyAdvipraH kalau yuge |
yajne to prAkR^itaM mAmsamashnIyAdvidhichoditam || [vyAsaH]
But giving up meat even in such cases is described as extraordinarily meritorious..
na mAmsabhakShaNe doSho na madye na cha maithune |
pravR^ittireShA bhUtAnAM nivR^ittistu mahAphalA || [manuH]
The same is stated elsewhere:
varShe varShe.ashvamedhena yo yajeta shataM samAH |
mAmsAni cha na svAdedyastayoH puNyaphalaM samam ||
phalamUlAshanairmedhyairmunyannAnAM cha bhojanaiH |
na tatphalamavApnoti yanmAMsaparivarjanAt ||
While kratus have their own importance, it is extremely important to realize the significance of the following statement made by bodhAyana:
sarvakratuyAjinAmAtmayAjI vishiShyate ||
