Mahāsudarśana Vyūha

Mahasudarshana Chakra

There are nine supreme mantras of Srī Sudarśana, the cakrarāja of śrīmannārāyaṇa. It is said that through the vyūha of Sudarśana that we describe below, the core power of Mahāsaṁkarṣaṇa mūrti is invoked and prayōgas including those of Dhūmāvatī, Simhamukhī, Gr̥dhramukhī, Pratyaṅgirā, śarabha, Bhairava, Kṣētrapāla, and Vaṭayakṣinī are defeated through its successful application.

The navaratna mantras of the great cakrarāja which are derived from the tejas of Mahānr̥siṁha are as below:

1. Sudarśana bīja
2. Sudarśana piṇḍa
3. ṣaḍakṣara mantrarāja
4. Saṁjña mantra
5. Kālacakra mantra
6. Pravartaka agnipiṇḍa mantra
7. Nivartaka varuṇapiṇḍa mantra
8. Sudarśana Gāyatrī
9. Sarvaśaktigrāsa mahāmantra

The following mantras are used through saṁpuṭīkaraṇa with each of the navaratna mantras:

1. śuddha Praṇava
2. Vaiṣṇava ṣaḍakśarī
3. Aṣṭākṣarī
4. Dvādaśākṣarī
5. Mantrarāja Nr̥siṁha
6. Viṣṇu Prāsāda
7. Hamsa
8. Ajapā
9. Mūla Gāyatrī
10. Anutārā
11. Sarasvatī
13. Rati
14. Mahālakṣmī
15. Tārā (not to be confused with the Mahāvidyā)

Thus, this results in a vyūha of 144 mantras (including the navaratna-s in their pure form, i.e. 15 X9 = 135 + 9 = 144) – invincible and capable of infinite power. While each of the mantras, with or without their saṁpuṭa, has its own r̥ṣyādayaḥ, the eight standard Sudarśana mudrās are used commonly:

śaṅkhaṁ cakraṁ gadā padmaṁ musalaṁ khaḍgamēva ca |
dhēnum ca yamapāśaṁ ca mudrā hyētāḥ prakīrtitāḥ ||
