The Attendants of Jagannātha

 

The Maṇḍala-krama of Lord Jagannātha begins with the worship of the eight guardians of the directions (aṣṭadikpālakas) along with their weapons:

1. Indra – vajra
2. Agni – śakti
3. Yama – daṇḍa
4. Nirr̥ti – khaḍga
5. Varuṇa – pāśa
6. Vāyu – aṅkuśa
7. Kubēra – gadā
8. īśāna – śūla

Then oblations are offered to:

1. Shankara
2. Umā
3. Brahmā
4. Rāma
5. Kr̥ṣṇa

The central worship is offered to Jagannātha along with his śakti, the great Goddess Vimalā. The seven chief aṅga dēvatās of Jagannātha and Vimalā are:

1. Balabhadra – Utkarṣiṇī
2. Pradyumna – Jñānā
3. Aniruddha – Kriyā
4. Nārāyaṇa – Parā
5. Brahmā – Yōgā
6. Viṣṇu – Prajñā
7. Narasimha – īśānī
8. Varāha – Anugrāhī
