Mahachandi

Mahachandi Durga

During śrāvaṇa, on a particular day, Pūrṇābhiṣikta śrīvidyōpāsaka worships Mahācaṇḍikā to earn freedom from tāpatraya so as to immerse himself completely in the pursuit of śivaikya as personified by Mahātripurasundarī Parābhaṭṭārikā. The procedure normally adopted for Saptaśatī pārāyaṇa using Navārṇa mantra is described as Laghcaṇḍī by ūrdhvāmnāya Tantra. In the krama for Mahācaṇḍī, the elevation occurs on account of ratnatraya, the three gems or vidyās: Sarvamaṅgalā, Pratyaṅgirā, and Vaiṣṇavī-Aparājitā. Each verse of Saptaśatī is recited along with the above three mantras, one vidyā corresponding to each charitra, in six different patterns.

Bhagavatī Sarvamaṅgalā presides over the prathama charitra. She is worshiped along with her four śaktis through their mūla mantras: KātyāyanI, Bhadrakālī, Trijaṭā, and Ekanētrā. The samaṣṭi of these four śaktis is Mahākālī.

Bhagavatī Pratyaṅgirā presides over the dvitīya charita. She is worshiped along with her śaktis Svayamvarā, Kr̥tyā, śābarī, Dēvasēnā, and ṣaṣṭhī – who collectively represent Mahālakṣmī.

Bhagavatī Mahāvidyā Vaiṣṇavī Aparājitā presides over uttama charitra. Her śaktis are Vārtālī, Padmāvatī, Bālā, śyāmalā, and Bagalāmukhī, representing Mahāsarasvatī.

These sixteen śaktis emanating from the left half of Parabhaṭṭārikā through her Daurga-dēha, when propitiated, grant kṣipra-siddhi of Chaṇḍikā to śrīvidyōpāsakas. Based on the phala desired by the pāṭhaka, the correspondence between the charitratraya and the śaktis varies. There is another vidhi for Mahācaṇḍī peculiar to Guhyakālikā but we shall refrain from that discussion here on account of śāstra-maryadā.
